Description:
Less branchy at top and a cleaner-growing tree than Pinus strobus; has much thicker and more ridgy bark wood yellow, coarser grained, less resinous and finishing much lighter and better timber; less sapwood by more than half. The cones seem to be smaller, less tapering and with the scales more appressed. This variety, whether in its growing state or as a lumber is immediately distinguished from Pinus strobus by the lumbermen, who value it highly, as it floats more lightly in water, and supplies the highest grade of lumber. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
