Description - Scandent shrubs or lianas, without spines, glabrous or pubescent with simple or branched hairs. Leaves alternate, simple, entire; stipules absent. Flowers actinomorphic, 5-merous, bisexual, solitary, terminal. Calyx tubular or campanulate, angular and sometimes inflated, 2-5-lobate; corolla infundibuliform or campanulate, with the limb 5-lobate; stamens 5, the filaments inserted on the tube, the anthers dehiscent by longitudinal sutures; ovary superior, of 4 connate carpels, partially inferior, the placentation axile, with numerous ovules, the style filiform, the stigma capitate. Fruit a coriaceous berry, enclosed by the accrescent calyx; seeds numerous, reniform. A neotropical genus of 8 species.
