Discussion:
2. Symplocos martinicensis Jacquin, Enum. Pl. Carib. 24. 1760. Type. Unknown to us. Symplocos martinicensis is a large forest tree reaching a height of 30 m and a girth of 50 cm, ranging from Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles to Trinidad, and along the coastal Guiana region from Venezuela to Brazil. In Guayana it has been collected recently as follows: GUYANA. Kamuni Creek, Essequibo River, 17 Apr 1944, Magidre 22873 (NY, US, U, F, K, VEN). Upper Mazaruni River Basin: tree 17 m, 20 cm diam, flowers white, forest above Paruima Falls, Kamarang River, above the Mission, 600 m alt, 29 Oct-4 Nov 1951, Magidre & Fanslunve 32445 (NY, US, VEN, F, K, U, GH); tree 20 m, 30 cm diam, mixed evergreen forest along Kamarang River above Utschi mouth, 550 m alt, 24 Oct 1960, Tillett & Tillett 45780 (NY, US, F, U, GH). It should be noted that the collections cited above are on soils derived from biotite intrusives characteristic, at these altitudes, of the Mazaruni and Kamarang basins which are overlain by massive Roraima sandstone deposits.
