Loose, once-pinnate branching and short, unipapillose leaf cells aid in recognition. The species is exceedingly variable, but Haplocladium angustifolium, a widespread variant that is more commonly green and suggestive of an Amblystegium, with rather longer-pointed, lanceolate leaves with longer cells and papillae at the upper ends, can usually be sorted out.

Cardot (1911) and also Reimers (1937) referred here Bescherelle's report of Thuidium virginianum (Brid.) Lindb., also known as Haplocladium virginianum (Brid.) Broth, and widely distributed in eastern North America.
