Description:
Species Description - Tree 6-12 m tall; bark dark gray; twigs cylindrical, puberulent, becoming glabrous with age. Leaf rachis 15-25 cm long, puberulent; leaflets 7-13, 7-13.5 X 3-4.6 cm, elliptic, oblong, oblonglanceolate, coriaceous, the lower surface puberulent, with prominent primary and secondary veins, the apex acute or obtusely acuminate, the base obtuse-rounded, unequal, the margins entire; petiolules 4-5 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, in axillary panicles to 10 cm long" axes usually reddish-tinged; pedicels ca. 5 mm long stout Sepals triangular, 0.5-1 mm long; petals yellowish green, oblong-lanceolate, ca. 3-4 mm long. Drupe of 1 or 2 monocarps, adnate to a swollen receptacle, the monocarps globose 7-9 mm long, turning from green to dark red and finally purplish black Seeds 1 per monocarp, nearly globose, 4-6 mm long.

Cultivated Species: Collections of Quassia amara L. from St. John have been made from a few individuals in cultivation.
