Description:

Species Description - Small tree to 10 m tall. Leaf blades 10-18 x 5-12 cm, obovate to wide elliptic, coriaceous, glabrous, primary and secondary veins prominent on lower surface, vein angles with pit or depression, the apex rounded or obtuse and slightly notched, the base cuneate, the margins entire or slightly wavy; petioles 0.5-2 cm long. Inflorescence covered with ash-colored hairs; bracts and bracteoles ovate-deltoid. Calyx with 5 unequal, lanceolate or elliptic, 4-4.5 mm long sepals; petals 5, ca. 1 cm long, reflexed, turning from light yellow to pink; stamens 10, one thicker and projecting beyond the petals; ovary top-shaped, the style subapical, projecting beyond the petals, the stigma nearly capitate. Nut 2-3 cm long, woody, grayish, smooth, producing caustic oils, the pedicel fleshy (hypocarp or "cashew apple"), yellow or reddish and edible. Seeds ("cashew nut") solitary, kidney-shaped, to 1.5 cm long.
