Polypodiaceae
Description:
Species Description - Rhizome short-creeping, 5-8 mm diam.; rhizome scales 3-4 mm long, 1.3-1.5 mm wide, clathrate, deltate-lanceolate, acuminate but not hairlike; fronds (30-)50-105 cm long, 5.5-10 cm wide, clumped; stipe lacking or extremely short; blade narrowly oblanceolate, gradually tapering to the base, apex acute (mostly young material) to acuminate, 5.5-8(-12) cm wide, glabrous; main lateral veins prominent and larger than crossveins; sori 6-15-seriate between the midvein and margin, often two per areole with no dividing vein, or with dividing vein half to complete; conspicuous nectaries in acroscopic axils of lateral veins.

Discussion:
Polypodium phyllitidis Linnaeus, Sp. pl. 2: 1083. 1753. Lectotype (chosen by Proctor, Fl. L. Antill. 2: 341. 1977). Plumier, Descr. pl. Amér., t. 38. 1693, representing a plant from “Antilles.” The venation in Oaxacan material of this species is highly variable, with the primary areoles being often subdivided, not only by acro-scopically developing veinlets but also by some developing basiscopically and/or branching laterally. The fronds are broad and the margins undulate to a greater degree than in other parts of the range of this species. Whether our material represents a distinct variety or merely a greater expression of these characters can be answered only after an intensive study of the genus.
