Description:
Species Description - Rhizome erect; rhizome scales clathrate, black, very narrow, 1-2 mm long, 0.1-0.3 mm wide, entire; fronds clumped; stipe (3-)5-15 cm long, ½-2/3 the frond length, green to black, at least at base, with scattered to dense, white catenate hairs 0.5-0.8 mm long; blade (3-)6-9 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, deltate to pentagonal, pinnate at base, apex pinnatifid, non-proliferous; rachis green with 0.5-0.8 mm catenate hairs, wings 0.3 mm wide; pinnae 1-3(-6) pairs, basal pair largest, greatly exaggerated basiscopically, 3-9 cm wide, sessile to long-stalked (11 mm), long-acuminate, lobed at base, slightly adnate, crenate-serrate, blade margin and veins on both upper and lower surfaces with whitish catenate hairs, 0.3-0.8 mm, membranous; veins forked, evident, raised on lower surface, not reaching margin, hydathodes present; sori 3-5(-9) mm long, 0.5(-0.8) mm wide; indusia ciliate.

Discussion:
Type. Jamaica. Swartz s.n. (S, photo US!). Asplenium anthriscifolium Jacquin, Collectanea 2:103, t. 2, f. 3-4. 1788. Type. Martinique. Jacquin s.n. (W, frag. BR, photo US!). This species is highly variable and more study is needed to determine the status of the variation. It is typically small; some specimens from Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz seem to have larger fronds, thicker texture, are glabrous and have a slightly different sort of dissection, but still with the same basiscopic development, long-attenuate pinnae, and axis coloration. These are recognized as A. minimum, which see for discussion of differences. Relationships of this species have not been fully explored. Superficially it seems most closely related to Asplenium adiantum-nigrum Linnaeus.
