Description: Inflorescences paniculate in our flora, the bracteoles deciduous; hypanthium often prolonged above ovary; calyx lobes 5 in our flora, free, persistent; petals 5; ovary 2-locular in our flora, the ovules 4-9 per locule, the stigma punctiform. Fruits usually red to black, crowned by the calyx lobes. Seeds 1 or 2, the seed coat usually membranous to chartaceous; embryo myrtoid.
Diversity and distribution: Ca. 15 species in the Neotropics.
