Description:

Description: Inflorescences usually dichasial or flowers solitary, the bracteoles deciduous; hypanthium prolonged above ovary apex; calyx lobes fused in our flora, irregularly tearing into 3-5 segments, persistent or deciduous; petals 5; ovary 2-5-locular, the ovules many per locule, the stigma capitate. Fruits yellowish-green to yellow, crowned by remnants of the calyx lobes. Seeds many, the seed coat bony; embryo myrtoid.

Diversity and distribution: Ca. 100 species in the Neotropics.
