Brief description of Rhynchospora: Perennial or annual, caespitose or rhizomatous. Stems and leaves variable. Inflorescences paniculate to capitate, comprising one to many simple spikelets. Spikelets usually lanceolate, with several to many spirally arranged scales, the lowest (1)2-several scales sterile, the rest subtending flowers. Flowers usually bisexual, the distal ones may be functionally staminate; perianth of 0-6(-20) bristles. Stamens 1-3. Stigmas 2. Achene usually lenticular to globose, topped with a tubercle.
