Discussion:

Brunellia gentryi is closely related to B. hygrothermica, from which it differs by its extra-small flowers, the diameter of the flattened calyx being only 2.5-3 mm with lobes 1 × 0.5 mm long, the smallest found in the genus. Also, the leaves are membranaceous, much thinner and smaller than in B. hygrothermica. The main branches of inflorescences are shortly pubescent or puberulent, while they are glabrous in B. hygrothermica. The terminal floral branchlets and pedicels in B. gentryi are minutely tomentose with patent or erecto-patent hairs, while in B. hygrothermica they are rather appressed or substrigose and smaller. Flowers in B. hygrothermica have calyces 4.5-6 mm diam., the calyx lobes 1.5-2 mm long × 1-1.6 mm wide.
