Family Description - Fls perfect, regular or irregular, strongly perigynous, 4–8-merous; pet borne at the top of the hypanthium or within its tube, crumpled in bud, or seldom wanting; stamens as many or more often twice as many as the pet (or sep), rarely numerous, attached within the hypanthium, the ± elongate filaments often alternately unequal; ovary superior, often subtended by a hypogynous disk, plurilocular (sometimes incompletely so, the partitions not reaching the summit); style 1, with capitate stigma, or the stigma rarely sessile; ovules ± numerous; fr dry, usually capsular; seed with a straight embryo, 2 expanded cotyledons, and no endosperm; lvs simple, entire, exstipulate, opposite or less often alternate or whorled. 25/nearly 500, mostly in warm reg.

In addition to the following genera and spp., Lagerstroemia indica L., the crape-myrtle, occasionally escapes toward the s. part of our range. It is a tall shrub with large panicles of purple fls, the 6 pet long-clawed, the stamens ca 40.
