Description:

Distribution and Ecology - A plant of the Hylaea, reaching southward into Rio de Janeiro, Paraguay and along the Ucayali into Peru, along Rio Mata into Colombia and into the upper Orinoco of Venezuela. VENEZUELA. Amazonas: common shrub covering sand bars in the Orinoco river 15 miles below San Fernando, 26 Oct 1950, Maguire, Cowan & Wurdack 29345 (female young fr. NY); Bolivar: Rio Orinoco, river bank between mouth of Rio Pargueni and mouth of Rio Horeda, abundant forming large colonies along river, seen also at Ayacucho, 14 Dec 1955, Wurdack & Monachino (female, male NY)

Discussion:

Hermesia castaneifolia Willd., Sp. Pl. ed. 4. 809. 1805.

Type. “In ripa arenosa Orinoci (Humb. et Bonpl.).” Not seen.

The leaf margin shows great variation between entire, sparingly dentate, and sharply dentate, and the shape between willowlike and chestnutlike.
