Genus Description - Stout to small herbs. Leaves: blade narrowly elliptic, glabrous or covered with microscopic hairs; ligule small, 1-2 mm long. Inflorescences with chartaceous, caducous bracts, each subtending a 1-10-flowered cincinnus, the bracteoles tubular. Flowers: calyx tubular to turbinate, shortly 3-lobed; stamen with filament ca. 1 cm long, the anther red; labellum spreading or tubular. Capsules usually crowned by persistent calyx. Seeds numerous, glossy brown, with an orange to white, laciniate aril.
