Genus Description - Highly variable epiphytes, lithophytes, and terrestrials, rarely with stems swollen into pseudobulbs. Leaves cauline, few to many, distichous, usually coriaceous, sessile, with persistent conduplicate leaf bases. Inflorescences usually terminal racemes, panicles, or umbels. Flowers variable, inconspicuous to showy, often fragrant, resupinate or not; sepals subequal, spreading; petals similar to but usually narrower than sepals, often filiform; lip fused along length of column, simple or 3-lobed, the lobes often lobulate, the lamina usually with paired calli at base; column short to long, straight to arcuate; pollinia 4, waxy.
