Genus Description - Caespitose or rhizomatous perennials or annuals; culms and leaves variable. Inflorescences paniculate to capitate, comprising one to many simple spikelets; spikelets usually lanceoloid, with several to many spirally arranged scales, the lowest (l)2-several scales sterile, the rest subtending flowers. Flowers usually bisexual, the distal ones sometimes functionally staminate; perianth of 0-6(20) bristles; stamens 1-3; stigmas 2. Achenes usually lenticular to globose, topped with a tubercle. Including Dichromena (Thomas, 1984).
