Genus Description - Small to medium-sized terrestrial herbs, acaulescent or with short, fleshy stems. Leaves spirally arranged; blade bifid. Inflorescences with peduncle rather long and slender; spathes usually 2 or 3, less frequently 3 or 4, inserted immediately below spadix; spadix generally small, few-flowered, the flowers not in stacked rings, pistillate flowers surrounded by staminate flowers. Staminate flowers varying according to subgenus, in most species asymmetrical with pedicel attached to one side, the perianth lobes short or absent, usually developed on one side only, glanduliferous, the stamens few to many. Pistillate flowers connate with each other, the tepals reduced in most species, the placentae 4, parietal, the styles mostly lacking. Seeds ovoid to fusiform, terete, mostly dark-colored, with rather thin but characteristically sculptured testa.
