Description:
Genus Description - Glabrous shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate, coriaceous, with secondary veins percurrent along margins; stipules minute, entire. Flowers medium-sized, in axillary or terminal racemes or panicles; bracts and bracteoles minute, persistent; calyx of 5 unequal sepals; corolla of 5 distinct petals; stamens 10, the anthers nearly sessile, elongate, opening by 2 apical pores; ovary of 5 carpels, deeply lobed, the style single, gynobasic, the locules with a single ovule. Fruit an aggregate of 1-seeded drupes (monocarps) borne on a fleshy enlarged receptacle.
Distribution and Ecology - About 200 species from tropical America and Africa.
