Description:
Species Description - Rhizome stout, 1.0-1.5 mm diam., long-creeping; rhizome hairs thin, brown, 1.0 mm long, and also scattered, thicker, dark brown, 1.0-1.5 mm long; roots lacking; fronds 16-36 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, distant; stipe very short, lacking to 45 (occasionally to 40) mm long, light to dark brown, alate to base; blade linear, very dark green, drying nearly black, membranaceous, bipinnate to bipinnate-pinnatifid, reduced at base; rachis alate; pinnae glabrous or with occasional short (0.1 mm long) hairs; veins free, false veins lacking; sori one per pinnule or segment, free from blade tissue; involucre elongate, 1.5-2.0 mm long, 0.5 mm at middle, 0.3 mm at base, mouth strongly flaring, 1.0 mm wide, lips 0.5 mm broad.

Discussion:
Type. Mexico. Tabasco, Linden 1508 (Isotypes GH! K!). This species is commonly confused with T. radicans (q.v.) but can be distinguished most readily by the broadly flaring mouth of the indusium and its occurrence at lower elevation.
