Description:
Species Description - Rhizome woody, 5-10 mm thick (excluding stipe bases), clothed at apex with dark brown, deltate-ovate, attenuate, sharply denticulate scales up to 8 mm long; similar but paler scales along basal part ofthe stipe. Fronds laxly arching, 60-130 cm long; stipes much shorter than the blades, dark brown, grooved adaxially. Blades ovate-oblong to lanceolate, 20-40(-50) cm broad near base, long-tapering acuminate at apex, slightly narrowed at base, 1 -pinnate-pinnatifid to 2-pinnate; rhachis sometimes viviparous toward distal end; pinnae 12-18 pairs, often rather distant, narrowly oblong, long-acuminate, 4-6(-9) cm broad; segments or pinnules oblong, 5-8 mm broad, blunt or rounded at apex, usually somewhat adnate at base, the margins crenate, lobed, or rarely pinnatified. Sori mostly 2-3 mm long, with rather few sporangia; indusium light brown, lacerate-fimbriate, deciduous.
Distribution and Ecology - General Distribution. Greater Antilles except Jamaica, and Guadeloupe. Distribution in Puerto Rico. Occurs in the Siena de Luquillo, Siena de Cayey, and the Cordillera Central; recorded from Adjuntas, Cayey, Ceiba, Jayuya, Naguabo, Orocovis, Rio Grande, and San Lorenzo. Habitat. Moist slopes and ravines in wet montane forest at high elevations (900-1300 m), locally common.

Discussion:
Type. L'Herminier in 1861, from Guadeloupe (RB, fragm. SJ).
Syn. Biplazium grammatoides Fee, Mem. foug. 11:43, t. 11. 1866, not K. Presl, 1851. (Same type as B. I'herminieri.)
