Description:
Species Description - Rhizome decumbent to ascending or erect, subwoody, 10-15 mm thick (excluding dense root mass and stipe bases), bearing a few brownish, subclathrate, glabrous, lanceolate scales at apex, or more especially such scales on base of stipe. Fronds several, erect-arching, up to 3 m long or more; stipes to 2 cm thick, half as long as the blades, succulent and nearly terete in life, containing two brace-shaped vascular bundles with concave sides facing each other. Blades oblong, 1-2 m long and up to 1 m broad; pinnae numerous, oblong or broadly ligulate, 25-55 cm long, 6-12 cm broad, abruptly short-acuminate at the apex, more or less cordate-clasping at base, the margins entire, scarious; terminal pinna like the lateral ones; tissue bright green, thin-herbaceous.

Type. Petiver, Pter. Amer., t. 12, fig. 2, which is a transposed copy of part oft. 106 of Plumier's Traite foug. Amer., which in tum was based on material found by Plumier in Martinique.
