Description:

Species Description - Caudex prostrate in humus or decumbent, up to 1 m long or more, rarely ascending or suberect, clothed at apex with lustrous pale brown, concolorous, lance- to ovate-attenuate scales, these 1-1.5 cm long. Fronds 0.8-2 m long; stipes dull or dark brown, distantly muricate toward base. Blades ovate-oblong, 0.4-1.5 m long, the smaller ones 1-pinnate-pinnatifid, the larger 2-pinnatepinnatifid; rhachis dull brownish or olivaceous, unarmed, glabrous abaxially, densely puberulous in adaxial groove; pinnae stalked, articulate, those of small states narrowly lance-oblong, 10-16 cm long, 2-3(-5) cm broad, acuminate, pinnatifid, the segments close, oblong-falcate, minutely serrulate at the obtuse apex; pinnae of large fronds deltate-oblong, acuminate, 30-45 cm long, 15-20 cm broad, long-stalked, with about 12 pairs of stalked articulate distant pinnules, these linear- oblong, long-acuminate, pinnatifid about two thirds the distance to the secondary costa; segments oblong, the costule bearing 1 or 2 minute bullate scales abaxially; veins 7-10 pairs, prominulous, simple or a few once-forked. Sori 6-9 pairs, mostly medial or supramedial, lacking any vestige of indusium.

Distribution and Ecology - General Distribution. Endemic to Puerto Rico. Distribution in Puerto Rico. O f general occurrence in the Siena de Luquillo, Siena de Cayey, and Cordillera Central; recorded from Adjuntas, Bayamon, Cayey, Jayuya, Naguabo, Orocovis, Ponce, Rio Grande, San Lorenzo, and Utuado. Habitat. Moist forest slopes at middle to high elevations (500-1240 m), locally common.
