Description:
Species Description - Plants epiphytic; rhizomes 1-4 cm long, short-creeping to suberect, radially symmetric, the scales narrowly lanceolate, castaneous, concolorous, shiny, 0.5-2.0 x 0.5 mm, setulate and sometimes also puberulent, the setae present on scale margins and rarely also on surfaces, hyaline to castaneous, mostly shorter than the width of the scales, 0.1-0.5 mm long, the hairs scarce, 0.05-0.10 mm long, simple, and turgid on scale margins and 0.1-0.2 mm long, branched, and turgid on apices; fronds 20-110 x 4-9 cm, caespitose, pendulous, with indeterminate growth; stipes 1.5-2.0 cm x 0.4-0.6 mm, castaneous to dark brown, with simple, yellow to golden, 0.5-3.0 mm long setae and simple or branched, hyaline to yellow, turgid, 0.1-0.2 mm long hairs; blades linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, pinnatisect, thin-chartaceous, gradually tapering at both ends, sometimes with up to 5 reduced segment pairs at the bases; rachises sclerenchymatous, dark brown to black, moderately densely covered with simple, abaxially also bifurcate and stellate, up to 15-branched, hyaline to golden, 0.5-3.0 mm long setae and puberulent like the stipes; pinnae perpendicular or up to 70° oblique to the rachises, alternate, 2.0-4.0 x 0.8-1.2 cm, deltate to linear-deltate, symmetric at the bases, 3/4 to entirely adnate to the rachises, apices acute, margins setose, the setae simple, bifurcate, and stellate, 3- to 5-branched, hyaline to golden, 0.5-3.0 mm long; sinuses 1-10 mm wide; veins free, 1-furcate, ending inframedially to submarginally, conspicuous and black, or obscure; blade surfaces adaxially and abaxially moderately densely covered with simple and scattered, bifurcate, hyaline to yellow (golden), 0.5-2.0 mm long setae and rarely also with stellate, more strongly branched, yellow setae; hydathodes with lime dots; sori round, arising at the vein apices, to 28 per pinna; receptacles not or sparsely setose; sporangia ciliate, cilia to 0.2-1.0(-2.0) mm long.

Discussion:
Alansmia lanigera is characterized by the following combination of characters: first, a dense to moderately dense indument of hyaline to golden setae that are simple or sometimes stellate on the blade surfaces; simple, bifurcate, and stellate, 3- to 5-branched on the blade margins; and simple, bifurcate, and stellate, up to 15-branched, up to 0.1 mm stipitate on the rachises abaxially; in addition, hydathodes with lime dots and pinnae that are alternate, 0.8-1.2 x 2-4 cm, deltate to linear-deltate, with acute apices, basally symmetric, and 3/4 to entirely adnate to the rachises. The majority of the specimens of Alansmia lanigera, including the type of the synonym Polypodium sericeolanatum, have simple setae on the blade surfaces. Nevertheless, some specimens from Ecuador and Colombia (Holm-Nielsen 4663, Wiggins 10768, MacDougal 4362) have stellate setae on the blade surfaces and are more densely setose overall. The type of P. lanigerum also has this unusual indument and is the only specimen of this species from Peru. Superficially, these unusual specimens of A. lanigera resemble A. stella var. flava, but that variety can be distinguished easily by the branched setae growing out of long axes abaxially on the rachises.
