Description:
Genus Description - Plants epiphytic or epipetric, erect to arcuate or pendent, determinate or indeterminate; rhizome erect or short- to long-creeping, radial or dorsiventral, scaly, the scales 1-6 x 0.1-0.2 mm, ovate to linear-lanceolate, clathrate, light to dark brown, glabrous or ciliate; petiole absent to 15 cm long, terete, glabrous to densely pubescent; lamina linear, lanceolate, or obovate, membranaceous to subcoriaceous, deeply pinnatisect, pinnate or pinnate-pinnatisect, gradually reduced or truncate at the base, in some species showing periodic constrictions due to a seasonal growth pattern; rachis straight or flexuous, with dark sclerenchyma obscured or not by laminar tissue, glabrous or conspicuously pubescent; segments plane, the base attached parallel or obliquely on the rachis, the apex acute to obtuse, the margin entire, crenulate or pinnatifid, plane or slightly revolute, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, the hairs generally similar to those of the rachis; sinuses about the same width as the segments or broader; venation pinnate; costae visible or not (the black sclerenchyma obscured or not by laminar tissue), glabrous or sparsely pubescent, the hairs similar to those of the rachis; veins simple, with blackish sclerenchyma absent or restricted to base, ending in hydathodes that lack calcareous deposits; hairs simple (1- to 5- celled) or 1- to 3-furcate (3- to 5-celled), generally whitish and soft, or, in some species, simple (1-celled), rigid, and reddish (setae-like hairs); sori medial, rounded, superficial or sunken; sporangial capsules glabrous or ciliate; spores globose, tetrahedral, green.
