Description:
Species Description - Herb, to 80 cm tall; rhizome short and stem for the greater part supraterranean, 2-5 mm thick, hirsute to hirtellous with straight and uncinate hairs, sometimes puberulous; internodes to 2 cm long. Leaves almost distichous; lamina oblong to (narrowly) lanceolate to subobovate or to elliptic, (3-)7-25 × (1.5-)2.5-8.5 (-10) cm, (thinly) chartaceous, sometimes variegated; apex acuminate; base subacute to obtuse, sometimes rounded or subcordate; margin faintly to distinctly ± irregularly crenate-dentate to subentire; upper surface strigose to hirsute to hirtellous, sometimes sparsely so, mostly ± scabrous; lower surface with minute uncinate hairs and on the main veins usually with much longer appressed to patent hairs, mostly ± scabrous; lateral veins 7-16 pairs, faintly loop-connected; tertiary venation scalariform (to reticulate); petiole 0.5-2(-3) cm long, hirsute, sometimes puberulous; stipules narrowly triangular, to 0.25 cm long, uninervate, usually deflexed, ciliolate. Inflorescences sometimes in pairs, green, the flowering face pointing upwards; peduncle 1.5-7 cm long, sparsely to densely hirsute, also with minute and ± retrorse uncinate hairs; receptacle centrally attached, discoid, (sub)orbicular to slightly angular in outline, 1-3 cm diam., mostly ± lobed, the flowering face plane to ± convex, the outside puberulous, mainly with ± retrorse uncinate hairs, the margin ± faintly and irregularly lobed, the fringe very narrow, sometimes to 3 mm broad; bracts in 2-3 rows on the margin, ovate to elliptic to oblong, 0.5-1 mm long, glabrous or sparsely puberulous, the bracts of the outer row not distinctly different in size; staminate flowers among the pistillate ones or ± distinctly concentrated in the periphery of the flowering face; tepals 2; stamens 2; filaments longer than the perianth; stigmas (almost) equal in length, 1.5-2 mm long, white. Endocarp body 2.5-3 × 2-2.5 mm, tuberculate.

Discussion:
Dorstenia hirta is a rather variable species and in vegetative characters sometimes hardly distinguishable from D. turnerifolia. These two species are, however, very distinct in the floral characters. The two collections from Caraguatatuba, São Paulo, Carauta 1745 and Lanna 139, have narrow, sparsely hairy leaves and resemble D. brevipetiolata. These and other collections with similar features have recently been placed in D. erecta by Valente et al. (1998). They reinstated!), erecta largely because of anatomical differences found between this form and the more common and more distinctly hairy form of D. hirta. Specimens at LE from cultivated material are annotated as D. erecta var. maculata Regel, which was probably not published.
