Description:

Subspecies Description - Perianth of the staminate flower minutely puberulous outside. Pistillate flowers 3-7(-9) per inflorescence; upper part of the perianth cylindrical to narrowly ovoid, almost as broad as the lower part, both parts puberulous. Fruiting perianth cylindrical, oblongoid or sometimes ellipsoid, 1-1.2 × 0.5-0.6 cm, red, turning black (or dark red?), the apex sometimes curved, the surface smooth and puberulous; pedicel usually rather slender, 1-2 mm thick, but occasionally to 4 mm thick, cylindrical and regular in outline in fruit.

Discussion:

The three collections from Suriname and French Guiana deviate somewhat from the other collections of subsp. uaupensis. Additional collections may clarify the status of these three collections.
