Description:

Description - Fruits subglobose to obovoid, rarely ovoid, 1.2-2.3 × 1.1-1.8 cm, orange.

Discussion:

Guilielma mattogrossensis was included by Henderson (1995) and Henderson et al. (1995) as a synonym of Bactris riparia. Further study has shown that it does not belong there but rather under B. gasipaes var. chichagui. Two specimens from Peru, both sterile, also presumably belong here (Huanuco: Prov. Tingo María, Naranjilla, between Tingo Maria and Río Tulmayo, 1 May 1960, Moore et al. 8391 (BH); Prov. Tingo María, Río Cayumba near its jct. with Río Huallaga, 700-800 m, 1 Jun 1960, Moore et al 8557 (BH)).

Within var. chichagui it is possible to recognize at least three different fruit types. The first, from Acre and Rondônia in Brazil, has subglobose fruits with a rostrum and ellipsoid endocarps (much like a smaller version of the endocarp of var. gasipaes). The second, from Venezuela and Colombia, has smaller subglobose fruits and endocarps. The third, from scattered localities in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia has larger, almost ovoid fruits and ellipsoid endocarps.
