Description:

Low, erect herb to about 10 cm, from shallow horizontal stems no longer than aerial portions of plant, sporangia born in axils of leaves. Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
Habitat:

Growing in rich, moist, shady woodland. With Betula, Acer, Prunus, Rhododendron, Aralia, Diphasiastrum, Medeola, and Athyrium. Common. Found mainly on and around fallen trees and moss-covered rocks.
