Description Author and Date: Nichole M. Tiernan, July 2013, as modified for the PBI Miconiaea project.
Description: Shrub or bush, up to 1-5 m. Young stems terete, pubescent with stipitate-stellate trichomes and elongated trichomes, internodes longitudinal ridges absent, nodal line absent. Leaves isophyllous; petiole 1.0-6.6 cm long, pubescent as in the stem; the blade 6.5-16.5 x 3.1-8.9 cm, ovate-elliptic, chartaceous, the apex narrowly acute, the base rounded, the margin crenulate and ciliate with trichomes 0.4-1.1 mm long; secondary veins 4-6 pairs, basally, sometimes the 3rd pair of veins is pronounced, and sometimes it's a faint marginal, tertiary veins percurrent, reticulate, areoles 0.4-2.0 mm wide, veins flat on the adaxial surface and raised on the abaxial surface; adaxial surface bullate, pubescent with bulla-based trichomes without enations 0.4-0.9 mm, and pubescent with elongated trichomes 0.3-0.8 mm on the primary and secondary veins; abaxial surface pubescent with stipitate-stellate and elongated trichomes 0.4-1.1 mm, pubescent on the veins as in the surface. Inflorescences a terminal, panicle, 2.8-10.5 cm long; peduncles terete, pubescent with stipitate-stellate trichomes and elongated trichomes 0.7-1.8 mm; bracts caducous; bracteoles 0.7-2.7 x 0.2-0.6 mm, lanceolate, persistent, margins ciliate, surface pubescent with sessile-stipitate trichomes.. Flowers 5-6 merous, diplostemonous, pedicel 1.0-7.5 mm long (0.5-0.8 mm below hypanthium), pubescent as in the inflorescence. Hypanthium 2.2-2.3 mm long, campanulate, 2.7-4.3 mm wide at torus, external surface pubescent with stipitate-stellate trichomes and elongated setulae 2.2-3.2 mm. Calyx open in bud, the tube 0.6-0.7 mm long at anthesis, the lobes 1.4-2.5 x 1.2-2.0 mm, ovate; calyx teeth stout appendages 0.4-1.6 x 0.3-0.4 mm, pubescent as in the hypanthium. Petals-5-6, 6 x 3.2-3.8 mm, oblong-ovate, white at anthesis (drying yellow), glabrous, the apex attenuate-rounded, the base truncate, tapering, the margin entire. Stamens isomorphic, filament 3-3.2 mm long, yellow, anthers with 2 locules, thecae 2.1-2.3 x 0.35 mm, straight, opening by 1 upright 0.2 pore, yellow at anthesis, connective not prolonged below the thecae. Ovary 6-locular, the apex absent a corona; style 5.5 mm long, curved, lower apex sparsely glandular-puberulous, trichomes 0.1-0.2 mm long; stigma truncate to slightly expanded, 0.4-0.6 mm wide. Berries 3.3-4.6 x 3.5-6.3 mm, ovoid, black, pubescence persistent when mature, calyx persistent.
