Description:
Description Author and Date: Frank Almeda, based on Almeda, F. (2009). Melastomataceae. In: G. Davidse, M. Sousa-Sânchez, S. Knapp, & F. Chiang (eds.), Flora Mesoamericana: Cucurbitaceae a Polemoniaceae. 4(1): 164-338.
Type: Holotype: Costa Rica, Skutch 3154 (US!).
Description: Terrestrial or epiphytic shrub to 1 m tall, the terete upper internodes, nodes, and young petioles densely to moderately covered with reflexed somewhat basally compressed barbellate to obscurely roughened white or stramineous hairs 3-10 mm long. Leaves of a pair markedly unequal in size, ovate-cordate, apex short-acuminate, base rounded to shallowly cordate, the margin ciliate and obscurely crenulate to subentire, 7-9-nerved, the adaxial surface glabrous at maturity, the abaxial surface on very young leaves moderately to sparsely pubescent on the primary and higher order veins with curly somewhat tangled smooth hairs that persist to varying degrees but are typically deciduous with age; larger blade 11.5-16 x 7.5-13 cm; smaller blade 5-7.5 x 3.5-5.2 cm. Inflorescence an axillary dichasium 2-3 cm long, pendant and paired in leafy or defoliated nodes, the internodes glabrous, the nodes sparingly setose with smooth spreading hairs 2-3 mm long; flowers 5-merous on glabrous pedicels 1-3 mm long, the persistent subulate-aristate bracteoles 1-1.5 x 0.4-0.5 mm. Hypanthia glabrous like the calyx lobes and exterior calyx teeth. Calyx lobes ovate to triangular-ovate, 1-1.5 x 1 mm; exterior calyx teeth ± triangular at the base but abruptly tapering and setiform distally, 1-2 mm long. Petals glabrous, white or pinkish-white, oblong-obovate, 6-6.5 x 2-3 mm. Filaments 2-2.5 mm long, conspicuously constricted just below the anther thecae; anthers ca. 2 mm long, probably yellow with a dorsally inclined apical pore; connective thickened and prolonged dorso-basally up to 0.25 mm below the thecae. Ovary 5-locular, 2/3-inferior, apex elevated into a truncate cone 0.5 mm high; mature berry and seeds not seen.
Habitat and Distribution: Local and uncommon in cloud forests. 1400-1750 m. COSTA RICA (Taylor 1328, DUKE). (Endemic).
Taxonomy and Systematics: There is some notable variation in foliar size and in the degree to which the cauline hairs are barbed or roughened but in all other diagnostic features the specimens examined (although few) are identical and surely conspecific.
Notes: [Description based only on Mesoamerican specimens.]
