Because it is conceivable that the collector could have initiated his distance measuring either at the place where BA-986 departs from the center of the city of Arraial D'Ajuda heading west (-16.4889707 -39.0740454) or where "Estrada Trancoso" branches from BA-986 (ca. 5 km W of the city center) and begins to head south towards Trancoso (-16.4824379 -39.1196001), chose the midpoint along road BA-986 between these two places as the starting point for the offset (-16.480262 -39.0946341), and used the road distance from this point to the further of the two endpoints of this stretch of road as the linear extent (2.79140 km).
