Genus Description - Erect or scrambling herbs or shrubs; stems flattened at nodes. Leaves opposite or nearly so, petiolate. Flowers unisexual or bisexual, minute, with tuft of long hairs at base, produced in spikes along terminal or axillary panicles; bracts and bracteoles persistent; tepals 5; stamens 5, the filaments united at base into a cup; interstaminal appendages present or not; ovary with 1 ovule per carpel, the stigmas 2, sessile. Fruit thin-walled, circumscissile and nearly globose; seeds nearly globose to lenticular.
