Discussion:
M. flaviflora Gleason, Bull. Torrey Club 63: 533. 1936. M. flaviflora Gleason var. emigrans Gleason, Brittonia 2: 320. 1937. Gleason had indicated in his notes the reduction to synonymy of the Costa Rican variety; even the differences cited by him in the varietal description do not serve to separate Central American and South American collections. Gleason had also noted that Tonduz 7738 and 7870 from Costa Rica, both distributed as M. densiflora Cogn., are referable to M. nutans; the Cauca (Colombia) species is distinct. The first Ecuadorian record for M. nutans is Camp E-1096, from the Cordillera CutucĂș, Santiago-Zamora, elev. 900 m; more recent collections are Asplund 20013 (S) , from Mera, Napo-Pastaza, elev. 1100 m, and Acosta-Solis 12304A (F) , from Lila, Imbabura, elev. 550 m.
