Specific Epithet Etymology - foetidus = stinking

Species Description - Bruised foliage with odor resembling skunk; spathe ovoid with incurved summit, 8-15 cm, green, dull yellow, purplish, or spotted or striped with these colors; fr globose, 8-12 cm thick; seeds 1 cm thick; lvs basal, short-petioled, ovate, cordate, to 6 dm, the veinlets conspicuously anastomosing; 2n=30, 60.

Habitat - Swamps, margins of sluggish streams, margins of bogs; usually in wooded areas.

Geographic Distribution - NS and QC to NC, w. to MN and IA.

Flowering Time - January-April

Conservation Status - Secure
