Description:

Description: Shrub to 0.75 m tall; mature stems terete, striate, glabrous (lustrous); twigs subterete, bluntly angled, puberulent to glabrate. Leaves in whorls of 3, strongly imbricate, appressed to stem or slightly spreading, trigonous in cross-section, elliptic to linear, 2.5-5 x 0.5-1.0 mm, base cuneate, decurrent, apex acute to bluntly acute (mucronate with translucent setae), apparent margins glabrous to short-pilose (pectinate with short, translucent, eglandular to glandular setae to 0.3 mm long), lamina usually short-white-pilose above, glabrate, glabrous beneath; petiole 1-1.5 mm long, puberulent above, glabrous beneath. Inflorescence axillary, flowers 1-3 at tips of new growth; pedicel subterete, angled, 4-11 mm long at anthesis but elongating to 15 mm, densely short-white-pilose, also with or without many stout, translucent setae (apex branched or glandular) to 0.5 mm long; floral bract and subbasal bracteoles same size and shape as stem leaves, or awl-shaped and long-mucronate to 3 mm long. Flowers 5-6(-7)-merous; calyx 2-3 mm long, glabrous or puberulent, lobes linear-ovate, 2-2.7 mm long, acute, margins with or without translucent (gland-tipped) setae; petals oblong-elliptic to spathulate, 4-6 x 1.5-2 mm, obtuse to rounded, white to light yellow or pink when fresh, glabrous; stamens ca. 4 mm long; filaments ca. 2.2 mm long; anthers ca. 1.8 mm long; ovary glabrous; style ca. 1.8 mm long, glabrous. Capsule ± oblong, 3-3.5 mm long.

Distribution: Endemic to the Venezuelan Guayana, where it is known only from three collections from the southern tip of Cerro Duida. It was collected along rocky banks of streams or in sand on rocks in the river, at elevations of 1050 to 1600 m. Flowering and fruiting stages were found on all plants which were collected in late Jan, early Feb, Sep, and "Aug"...to "Apr" (Tate 815). Rare.

Type: Venezuela. Amazonas: Summit of Cerro Duida, gorge of Caño Negro, Savanna Hills, 1219 m, Aug 1928-Apr 1929 (fl, fr), Tate 815 (holotype, NY; isotypes, K, US, photo NY neg. 12210).
