Description:

Description: Epiphytic shrub to 1 m; mature branches coarsely and bluntly angled, glabrous, reddish-brown when dry; immature branches and twigs of new growth terete to subterete, puberulent, grayish- to reddish-brown when dry; epidermis thin, cracking longitudinally. Leaves coriaceous, glabrous, ovate to pyriform, 1-2 x 0.5-1 cm, basally rounded or obtuse, apically bluntly obtuse, marginally crenate each tooth gland tipped; obscurely 5-plinerved, only midrib prominent; petioles subterete, 1.5-2.5 mm long, puberulent adaxially; axillary buds with awl-shaped, stipule-like perulae 1.5-2 mm long. Inflorescence axillary, flowers solitary; pedicels terete, glabrous, ca. 1 mm long; bracteoles ovate, acuminate, 1-2 mm long, marginally glandular-fimbriate, concealing pedicel. Flowers with calyx puberulent, 5-7 mm long, 5-winged opposite the sinuses; hypanthium nonapophysate, 2.5-4 mm long; limb erecto-patent, sometimes striate, 2.5-3 mm long including the lobes; lobes triangular, acute, 1.5-2 mm long; sinuses rounded; corolla tubular, terete, 26 mm long and 3-5 mm in diam., puberulent, bright red, the lobes triangular, obtuse, reflexed at anthesis, 2 mm long; stamens subequal, 23-24 mm long; filaments connate into a tube 6.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers including tubules 18-19 mm long, dehiscing by oblique, terminal pores 1 mm long; thecae ca. 3.5 mm long; style exserted, glabrous, 24-27 mm long. Berry not seen.

Distribution: Costa Rica and Panama. Rare.

Type: Costa Rica. Cartago: Along CR#224 on property of ICE Hydroelectric plant ca. 4.4 km beyond main gate and ca. 17 km beyond the church in Orosi, ridge crest about 600 m above the road, 13 Dec 1975, Almeda & J. Utley 2673 (holotype, DUKE; isotypes, F, GH, LA, NY, US).
