This catalogue contains information from >82,000 specimens housed in The New York Botanical Garden’s Steere Herbarium that represent 33 genera treated in monographs by Rupert C. Barneby and colleagues and published in the “Memoirs of the New York Botanical Garden.”
Most specimens are filed, and thus catalogued, according to Barneby’s annotations or taxonomic treatments, but some are filed according to others’ more recent annotations.
Although Barneby annotated thousands of the specimens sent to him for identification and received as exchange, he did not annotate every specimen he identified. Because to within a year of his death, Barneby did all filing of legume specimens, the vast majority of these specimens are still filed where he put them when cataloguing for this project began, and specimens are catalogued by the names by which he filed them.
