A layer arising from the integument of a seed. Compare with aril and elaiosome.

Notes
The sarcotesta, which is usually fleshy, aids in dispersal by animals which either carry away the seed and eat the sarcotesta in another place or swallow the seed and sarcotesta, digest the sarcotesa, and pass the seed in another place.
