United States of America. New York. Westchester Wilderness Walk/Zofnass Family Preserve, Town of Pound Ridge. In the vicinity of the second bridge on the Joshua Hobby Lane. Just north of junction with the Upper Shad Road. Alt. 143m. (469 ft.)

Description:

Shrub, 5 m tall, the multiple stems ca. 2 cm diam, small buttresses at base. Bark dark brown, lenticels horizontally oriented. Leaves born on short shoots, the twigs reddish-brown, with scattered lenticels. Flowers unisexual, the male catkins ca. 8 cm long, arising directly from stems, the female catkins shorter, associated with leaves, the styles white. Old fruit still on tree, the bracts subtending female trifid. Seeds slightly winged. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
Habitat:

On hammock in wet area on Preserve side of bridge.

Collection Notes: This individual was incorrectly identified as Alnus incana based on the multi-stemmed shrub-like habit and wet habitat of this plant. Although we have currently identified this plant as Betula lenta, we are open to other suggestions.
