Uses: Eastern red cedar has aromatic wood that resists attacks of insects and fungi. It is used for fence posts, chests, closets, and house siding. The Algonquin Indians used the soft bark for bedding and the thin, tough roots as thread. Animals utilize the bark for nesting material and the fruits as a source of food for many animals, especially birds.
