  Árbol siempre verde de 15 a 30 pies de altura y 4 a 18 pulgadas de diámetro en el tronco. Se distingue por copa espesa redondeada con follaje verde oscuro, hojas opuestas coriáceas, flores azules en forma de estrella en ramilletes y frutos en cápsulas achatadas castaño anaranjado en forma de corazón. Produce una de las maderas comerciales más pesadas duras fuertes durables y difíciles de cortar utilizada en la ebanistería. El extracto de la madera lignumvitae tiene propiedades estimulantes y sudoríficas. El Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales y Fideicomiso de Conservación propagan esta especie para fines de reforestación y ornato. Se encuentra en bosques, malezas, pastizales y regiones secas de Puerto Rico y las Islas de Culebra y Vieques. Está distribuido en las Antillas, Bahamas, Panamá y norte de América del Sur. Evergreen tree of 15 to 30 feet of height and of 4 to 18 inches of diameter in the trunk. It is distinguished by the round dense canopy, dark green foliage, leathery opposed leaves, star shaped blue flowers in racemes, and fruits in orange or chestnut color flattened heart shaped capsules. It produces a commercial wood, heavy hard, strong, durable, and difficult to cut; used in furniture. The extract of the lignumvitae wood is a stimulant and promotes sweating. The Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and Conservation Trust propagate this species for reforestation and ornate. It grows in forests, weeds, thickets, and dry regions of Puerto Rico and the Islands of Culebra and Vieques. It is distributed in the Antilles, Bahamas, Panama, and the North of South America.
