Family Description - Fls regular, perfect, hypogynous, (4)5-merous; sep distinct or shortly connate at base; pet distinct, imbricate; stamens twice as many as the pet, distinct, free from the pet; anthers becoming inverted during ontogeny, so that the morphological base is apical, opening by 2 pores at the apparent apex, sometimes produced into short tubes beneath the pores; pollen usually in tetrads; ovary imperfectly 5-locular, the deeply intruded placentas not joined in the center; stigma 5-lobed; ovules numerous; fr a loculicidal capsule; seeds numerous; seed-coat a single layer of cells; embryo tiny, undifferentiated, embedded in the endosperm; strongly mycotrophic, glabrous, perennial herbs or half-shrubs; lvs alternate to sometimes opposite or subverticillate, persistent through the winter except in Moneses, all basal or nearly so except in Chimaphila, rarely poorly developed or even suppressed; fls in racemes, corymbs, or umbels, or solitary and terminal. 3–4/45.
