Family Description - Fls regular, perfect, hypogynous, 4–5-merous; sep distinct or nearly so; stamens mostly as many (in our spp.) or twice as many as the pet, seated on or beneath a hypogynous nectary-disk; ovary of (2)3–4(5) carpels, unilocular, but sometimes with ± deeply intruded partial partitions, the styles distinct or merely connate at base; ovules on parietal or basal placentas; fr a capsule; seeds several or many, minute, provided with long hairs that usually form a tuft at one end; shrubs or small trees with small, alternate, exstipulate, mostly sessile, commonly subulate or scale-like lvs with embedded, multicellular, salt-excreting glands, and with small fls solitary or more often in slender, scaly-bracteate racemes, spikes, or panicles. 4/100, Old World.
