    Description - Plants leafy, medium-sized to very robust, green to brown, reddish brown or purple, ascending to erect or pendent, sometimes with a rhizome- like creeping base, irregularly branched. Stems rigid, usually with a brown cortex of small, thick-walled cells in 1-3 layers. Branches ventral intercalary or Frultama-type, ventral branches often flagelliform. Leaves transverse or incubous, alternate, 2-3-lobed, usually long and narrow and asymmetrical with dorsal segment broader, margins entire or toothed. Cells with small or large trigones, vitta present or absent; oil bodies granular. Underleaves similar to leaves but more symmetrical. Rhizoids absent or very scarce, in bundles from underleaf bases or occasionally from a leaf. Diotcous. Gametoecia on elongate shoots. Antheridia in axils of both bracts and bracteoles. Sporophyte surrounded by a strongly plicate penanth and a fleshy calyptra. Seta of numerous rows of cells. Capsule spherical, wall 4-7-layered. Vegetative reproduction unknown.
