Description
Description - Plants thalloid, green, without or with an ill-defined midrib, prostrate to erect, unbranched or pinnately branched, thallus margins without hairs. Central strand and ventral scales lacking. Oil bodies finely granular, sometimes absent. Gametoecia embedded in cavities on short, lateral branches or at thallus margins, antheridia in rows, archegonia in small clusters. Sporophyte surrounded by a fleshy calyptra; involucre lacking. Capsule ellipsoidal, opening by 4 valves, wall 2-layered. Spores small, unicellular. Elaters with 1(2) spirals, attached to tips of capsule valves. Vegetative reproduction occasionally by gemmae.
