Description
Description - Plants thalloid, with a distinct, swollen midrib and a unistratose lamina, prostrate or erect, simple or dichotomous, sometimes with ventral branches, thallus margins without hairs. Midrib with 1(3) central strands. Oil bodies finely granular. Ventral scales lacking. Gametoecia on dorsal surface of midrib, antheridia in a long band hidden under laciniate scales, archegonia in small groups surrounded by a scale or a tubular involucre. Sporophyte surrounded by a pseudoperianth or a fleshy calyptra. Capsule ellipsoidal to narrow-cylindrical, opening by 1-4 valves. Spores small, unicellular. Elaters with 2—3 spirals, free, not attached to capsule valves. Vegetative reproduction lacking in neotropical plants.
