  • Description

    Description - Plants thalloid, small, in rosettes or gregarious patches, dichotomous, usually with a deep, apical groove. Epidermal pores present or absent; air chambers in 1-3 layers, often rudimentary. Oil cells present or absent. Ventral scales in 1-2 rows or lacking. Antheridia and archegonia single, embedded in thallus. Involucres lacking; calyptrae 2-layered after fertilization. Sporophytes lacking foot and seta. Capsules globose, embedded in thallus, dorsally or ventrally protruding, cleistocarpous, wall disintegrating at spore maturity. Spores medium-sized to large, sometimes remaining in tetrads. Elaters lacking. Vegetative reproduction by tubers.
