Description
Species Description - Herbaceous perennial 3.5-15 dm. Roots fibrous, tubers absent. Stems with short stalked glandular hairs and with hirsute hairs scattered, erect, about 2 mm long. Stipules approximately half ovate, incised, the largest 0.8 - 3.5 x 0.4 - 2.4 cm. Major leaflets 3-13 (mid-cauline five to seven); blades obovate to elliptic to rhombic, sometimes broadly so, the apex somewhat obtuse to acute to rarely acuminate; abaxial surface with short stalked and sessile, glistening glandular hairs, very sparsely to moderately hirsute along the veins, the stiff hairs 0.5 - 2mm long; terminal leaflets the largest, the largest of these 3.2- 10.5 x 1.4-5.6 cm. Minor leaflets 1-3 pairs between each major leaflet pair. Inflorescence rachis with short stalked and sessile, glistening glandular hairs and sparsely to scattered hirsute, with the stiff hairs erect, about 2 mm long. Flowers numbering to 80 on each raceme, usually alternate along the rachis; sepals 1.9- 3.2 x 1.4-1.8 mm, apex attenuate and hooked when connivent; petals 2.4-4.2 x 1.3- 3.1 mm. Mature fruiting hypanthium some what obconic to turbinate to campanulate, deeply to shallowly sulcate two-thirds to nearly the entire length, the rim often expanded, with hooked bristles in 4-5 circum ferential rows, the lowermost reflexed; hypanthium surface with short stalked and sessile, glistening glandular hairs, the ridges and base often sparsely hirsute. Mature reflexed fruit with hypanthia 2.3-5.8 x 2.8- 6.2 mm.

The mature reflexed fruit of Agrimonia gryposepala is easily recognized by a grooved turbinate to campanulate hypanthium usually longer than 3 mm, by the 4-5 rows of circumferential bristles spread almost in a fan shape with the lowermost row reflexed, and by the slight hook at the sepal apex. Occasional plants of A. gryposepala may resemble plants of A. rostellata with five mid-cauline major leaflets interspersed with 0-1 pair of minor leaflets. Agrimonia gryposepala is distinguished by the mature reflexed fruit, hirsute hairs usually erect and approximately 2 mm long on the inflorescence rachis, and the absence of tuberous roots

Distribution
Agrimonia gryposepala has the most extensive range of the North and Central American species, occurring from Prince Edward Island to Guatemala in thickets and in deciduous, mixed deciduous, or pine woods (Fig. 6). Populations within Canada and the United States occur to 2100 m elevation. Populations in the mountains of Mexico and Guatemala are usually infrequent and occur from 300 to 3000 m elevation
