Description
Latin Diagnosis - Fructus ellipsoidei; folliculi plerumque glabri; lam- inae ellipticae vel lanceolatae, 2.5-8 cm latae; semina 9-12 mm longa, 7-8 mm lata.
Species Description - Leaves narrowly oblong or lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 2.5-8 cm wide; peduncles essentially glabrous; larger polyfollicles ob- longoid, glabrous, 25-35 follicles, these, when mature and open, with locules oval to almost round, not much longer than wide; seeds 9-12 mm long, 7-8 mm wide.

TYPE: MEXICO. Jalisco: forested margin of small tributary of arroyo San Lorenzo, 35 km NW of Guadalajara, 8 km NW of Tesist'an, Zapopan, 1450 m, 20º50'N, 103º34'W, 1450 m, 18 Mar 1987, Iltis et al. 29722 (HOLOTYPE: WIS!; ISOTYPES: IBUG!, MEXU!, MICH!, US!).
Eponymy: Named to honor Professora Luz Maria Villarreal de Puga, of the Instituto de Botanica, Universidad de Guada- lajara, indefatigable and energetic explorer of the Jaliscan flora.
Local names: "almacasusco" (Rzedowski 9135), "magnolia" and "manolia" (Vaz- quez-G. et al. 5019a-c). Representative specimens examined: MEXICO. Distribution
Vicinity of Guadalajara at Zapopan, Jalisco, and northward to Moyahua, Zacatecas, 1300-1600 m (Fig. 1). In deep ravines (barrancas) with forested margins along permanent streams, with Astronium, Equisetum, Ficus, Litsea, Malvaviscus, Nectandra?, Psilotum, Randia, Rhus, and Salix. Flowering from March to early July, with some flowers found throughout the year; fruits usually remaining attached and dehiscing in March or April of the following year; some trees dropping their dehisced fruits by May,
